Jazz Dance And Contemporary Jazz Dance Class, Ages 6 to Adult
Our jazz dance program gives dance students a chance to build confidence through full body expression with dynamic jazz dance movement that is thrilling to perform and exciting to watch onstage.
Jazz dancers get to use ballet as a foundation and athletically stretch their body to express, emote, and create a range of dance movement in jazz class that can make them look like a Broadway dancer to a dance finalist on the popular TV show So You Think You Can Dance.
What is jazz dance?
Jazz dance is a multitude of dance styles ranging from swing to street jazz dance to jazz funk dance to modern jazz dance.
The style of jazz that we teach here at Christine Rich Studio Dance Academy is consistently based on ballet, but our jazz dances can also include elements of basic acrobatics, lyrical jazz dance movements, an urban attitude, and a variety of theatrics.
Studio director, Christine Rich has choreographed numerous award winning jazz and contemporary dances and the CRS dance students continue to learn exceptional choreography in jazz dance classes.
Jazz dancers are extremely well rounded because of the incredible diversity since jazz dance includes such a wide range of dance influences.
Jazz dance for kids starts at age 6 in a Beginner Jazz Class. We have intermediate, advanced, and pre-professional levels and adult jazz classes.
Jazz dance for beginners of all ages starts with stretching and then progression combinations across the floor as well as short jazz dance combinations in the center of the dance studio classroom.
Jazz dancers learn to tell a story with their bodies and faces in jazz dance movement while developing strong jazz technique and athleticism that will be useful to them in their futures as dancers. Our jazz dancers also gain an understanding of the history of jazz dance and how it has evolved by dancing to historical as well as some of the latest and upbeat jazz dance songs.
Students have called our jazz classes physical and mentally stimulating, and they have certainly benefitted from the jazz dance program not just as dancers, but also in their personal lives.
Why dance jazz?
Jazz dancing is a diverse style by definition, the combinations and jazz choreography practiced in class benefit the students not just in this style of dance, but jazz classes also help them to improve across other dance class styles such as ballet, tap, hip hop, modern and even acrobatics.
For example, jazz technique and jazz dance terms complement ballet beautifully, with skills learned in one class translating to quicker improvement in another. The flexibility and strength gained in jazz dance lessons are useful for ballet and acrobatics, and the precision and musicality facilitated help students develop the sharpness and rhythm that modern and tap dance are famous for.
Dancers in our jazz program not only develop solid jazz dance technique and strong bodies, but they also develop mental strength and flexibility.
Jazz students obtain a kind of fearlessness and leadership present only in dancers because of the confidence that is built on consistent training, memorizing a challenging jazz dance routine, and the constant improvement that jazz dance moves provide.
While being a demanding style of dance to learn, jazz dance classes are still fun and enjoyable at all levels, and they yield beautiful results.
Specific jazz dance clothes are worn during weekly technique classes, but our students are always thrilled to wear their brand new jazz dance costume for the annual May dance recital.
Our popular jazz dance program is a recital favorite, featuring entertaining choreography filled with emotion and a variety of dynamic movements, from fast turns across the floor and amazing feats of flexibility to leaps that have the dancer flying across the stage, as well as gorgeous jazz dance costumes.
Audience members have commented that the jazz dance routines are good enough to be recorded as jazz dance videos to be seen on television, Broadway, and other major stages. The complex movements and precision of the dancers along with the exciting jazz dance songs awe younger audience members.
